Book Look by Mrs. Wilander, Librarian
Family Reading Night
Give thanks for great books and a beautiful library! The first Family Reading Night will be on Thursday, November 5. Come with your family any time between 5:30 and 7:30 and enjoy our
wonderful books and magazines. Students may enter the book raffle. (Mark your calendar for our second Family Reading Night. It will be Thursday, December 3, 5:30-7:30 in the LMC while the
Holiday Shoppe is going on in the gym.)

Children’s Book Week

During the week of November 16-20 we will be celebrating Children’s Book Week in the LMC. Each grade level will be doing special book activities when they have their weekly classes.
Special assemblies will be on Friday, November 20 with singers/songwriters Stuart Stotts and Tom Pease. This Wisconsin duo will perform a high energy, entertaining show with a reading focus. Stuart Stotts will also be meeting with the fourth graders to discuss the biographies he has written: Books in a Box: Lutie Stearns and the Traveling Libraries of Wisconsin and Curly Lambeau: Building the Green Bay Packers. The Scholastic Book Fair will run all week in a corner of the LMC. Be sure to stop by and pick up great Christmas gifts of books for your child’s home library. I would be glad to help you with your selections.

Homework Reference News

On the Central-Denison home page, found by clicking on our school on http://lakegenevaschools.com/ , you will notice a bright blue link on the left called Library Links. Four of the links that will appear are online data bases that your children may use for doing research at home.

Grolier Online Kidsoffers the New Book of Knowledge for children grades 3 and higher. This database offers reference, current events, and games. An interactive atlas, a dictionary, and a Spanish language encyclopedia are offered as well. A password is needed to enter the site.

Net Trekkeris an educational search engine that screens websites. This site is an excellent research site for students and parents. It is a safe site that will give age appropriate information from rated websites found on the World Wide Web. A password is needed.

Searchasaurusneeds no password. This data base offers a dictionary, two encyclopedias, articles from magazines and newspapers, and a picture library. Badgerlink is funded by the state and also offers Kid Search, Novelist K-8 (a fiction book list), TeachingBooks, and Encyclopedia
Britannica with an elementary school edition and Learning Zone for PreK-2. Click on the Badgerlink home link at the bottom of the screen to find the last sites in the list above.

World Book Online Reference Centeroffers currents events, an atlas, a dictionary, an encyclopedia and an Explore Wisconsin site. In the upper right corner there is a link
to a great feature called World Book Kids that is for younger students and also a link to a Spanish language encyclopedia. A password is needed. I have given students in Grades 3-5 user names and password labels that they have placed inside the cover of their agendas. If you have younger students and would like these passwords to post at your home computer, please call me at extension 4110 or ask your child’s teacher.

Happy Reading and Researching!
